How Phone QR Codes Work
A phone QR code uses the standard tel: URI scheme to encode a telephone number. When a user scans the QR code with their smartphone, the device recognises the format and automatically opens the native phone dialler with the number pre-filled and ready to call. This makes it an incredibly convenient way to provide contact information without requiring the user to manually type or search for a phone number.
The technology works universally across iOS and Android devices, as well as any other smartphone operating system that supports standard QR scanning and tel: URI links. There's no app installation required, no API keys needed, and no subscription — it's pure, open-source technology that's been standardised for years.
Phone QR vs. WhatsApp, SMS and vCard
While a phone QR code opens the dialler directly, a WhatsApp QR code opens WhatsApp with a pre-composed message ready to send. An SMS QR code opens the default messaging app with a pre-filled text message. A vCard QR code contains full contact details including name, email, address, website and multiple phone numbers.
Choose a phone QR code when you want users to make a voice call. Use WhatsApp or SMS if you want them to send a message first. Use vCard for comprehensive contact information that might be saved to the device's address book. For simple, straightforward calling — especially on business cards, window signage, or printed menus — a phone QR code is the most direct option.
Works on All Phones, Including Basic Smartphones
One of the great advantages of phone QR codes is their universal compatibility. Because they rely on the standard tel: URI scheme, they work on virtually every smartphone ever manufactured — from the latest flagship devices to older, basic handsets. There are no special apps to download, no iOS vs Android complications, and no version requirements.
Even feature phones with basic QR scanning capabilities can decode and dial from a phone QR code. This makes them ideal for reaching customers across a wide age range and technical proficiency level, making them perfect for service businesses, healthcare providers, and public-facing organisations.
